The Red Socks Brigade

Trails friend, not foe…

Unlike Scotland, England doesn’t have a right to roam- there are countryside rules and regulations, which some may argue are far too old fashioned and need addressing. However, they’re still there- and essentially what they mean for us are that we can ride on towpaths, bridlepaths and certain rights of way; but not on footpaths.

Most mountain bikers I know- although shouldn’t- venture on to sections of footpath sometimes- be it by accident, not actually knowing or just chancing it.

It’s not the ideal thing to do, as we want mountain biking to have a good name- but if you must travel on any section of footpath, make sure you extend courtesy to red-socked fellows out on the trail.

They’re on the trails for the same reason as you- because they’re beautiful, wind through the countryside and give you an appreciation of where you are…

Young people riding bikes and getting outdoors is only a good thing- so make sure you spread the word. People need reminding that the more young people enjoy the countryside, the more hope we have for a green future and less development.

If you see other users on the trail- slow down. Respect them- even if they’re a decent distance from the trail itself. Say hi, and if they have a dog maybe stop and stroke the dog or maybe that a friend of yours walks the same route etc.

Don’t give them the satisfaction of being a grumpy, bad-mouthed rider- leave them chatting about that ‘polite young man’ they met out on the trails. And should you see them again you’ll find they’ll have spread the word amongst their fellow red socks.

It’s a small world, and small-minded riders can ruin it for lots of others- if you absolutely have to ride where you shouldn’t, think about what you’re doing…
