I’ve always felt proud to be a mountain biker, but as someone that uses the roads to commute and rides a road bike here and there, I feel really proud to be a cyclist right now.
There aren’t many things that we excel at in this country, but at last maybe Wiggin’s phenomenal win will change things for good. We’ve had numerous World Championship medals in Mountain Biking, and numerous BMX titles too- but with the Tour De France being so heavily sponsored and televised- as the single biggest annual sporting event, things are going to change for the better.
A piece in the Sun newspaper said ‘our football flops couldn’t do it, and Andy Murray couldn’t do it either. But one thing’s for certain- Bradley Wiggins has done it!’
Entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson wrote a blog yesterday exclaiming how proud he was of the Sky team, and how they should come and see him when their contracts run out…
And Chris Boardman too was spelling it out for people to take note, stating how this moment will change things for good, and that it would be a catalyst not just for sport cycling- but for transport cycling too.. Cycling will get more visibility, younger riders will be encouraged and more to the point- inspired. Achieving something to a world level is possible.
There really hasn’t been a better time to support cycling, and with the Olympics right round the corner, it’s our duty to support the Brit riders- be it smashing it round Hadley Farm or putting in a World Record in the Velodrome.
Fly those flags high and enjoy the ride!
